In Ireland, No Distinction, No Tolerance, No Mercy

That’s right, the Irish voted no to tolerance and mercy last Friday when they became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. That’s because when they voted to legalize marriages “without distinction” as to sex, they tossed on the trash heap fake “tolerance” and fake “mercy.” Fintan O’Toole, columnist for the Irish Times, explains that “tolerance is what ‘we’ extend, in our gracious goodness, to ‘them’… Ireland has left tolerance far behind.” And as for the “mercy” that has been Pope Francis’s motto these past two years–mercy can be a beautiful thing, but it can and has been misused by Catholic hierarchs when they claim to practice a merciful love of neighbor but in fact practice that love very selectively, capriciously, and self-servingly. Tip of the hat to the million-plus voters, from Panti Bliss on down, who pointed the way toward a happier Irish future.
